It depends on the dog and its’ behaviour. For some dogs, only small persistent barking is permitted (for example, Greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds and Shar Peis), while other dogs may bark for hours and hours. In some areas of the country you may be able to fine a dog for excessive barking (this is not recommended). In other areas of the country you may be able to have the dog’s bark licence revoked (this is not recommended). In any event, do not use physical force on your dog to stop barking. If your dog is barking in a way that hurts your own health or well being, or that of others, it may be best to take steps to correct the behaviour.
What is excessive barking for dogs?
Excessive barking can be a sign of various health issues, so it’s best to start with a trip to your vet. If your pup is exhibiting signs of pain or discomfort, you may need to look into ways to help them feel more comfortable. The first thing you can do is try to identify what is causing the issue. Is there someone or something in the home that your dog doesnt like? Is he scared of something new that has moved in? Is he feeling some pain or discomfort? Whichever the case may be, you can start by identifying and addressing the root cause of the issue.Once you have figured out what is causing the excessive barking, you can work on finding a solution that works for both of you. Separate yourself from the situation for 10-15 minutes and give your pup some space to calm down on his own. Play with him later when you are all back together again. Using positive reinforcements like treats and play time can teach your pet that barking doesnt necessarily get them what they want.If all else fails, you should definitely have a conversation with your vet and discuss any medications they may recommend as well as any painful procedures they may recommend.
